Open Mental Health reports from the Let's Connect consultation held in Oct 2023

Following on from the Open Mental Health workshop in 2023 Helen Fielden reports today (04 Jan 2024):

‘I’m pleased to be able to share the reports with you from our Let’s Connect consultation event that Open Mental Health Community Engagement Team ran last year. The event was for us to learn more about the barriers that Deaf, deaf and hard of hearing people face in accessing mental health services in Somerset. We’re grateful to the people who attended for their honesty and openness in describing the barriers that they face. They were clear that there is much to be done before there is equitable access to services for these communities.

Attendees said:

“A barrier is people saying it doesn’t matter when we can’t hear or understand information. We do matter”.

“Beyond frustration, anger, distress, trauma, becoming more ill, depression anxiety and traumatisation on top of existing trauma”.

Over the coming months we plan to work with representatives of these communities to ensure that their voices are heard and the right steps are taken towards equitable access to services.

If you would like to be involved, or have any comments, please don’t hesitate to get in touch
