Big update today from SignHealth. They have published the results from their NHS Accessible Information Standard (AIS) survey.
SignHealth commented that the stories they have received demand change and they will not accept this inequality. Deafinate Matters CIC are already working in partnership with our local NHS services to influence change.
The responses SignHeallth received informed them that:
* Only 1 in 10 disabled people with communication needs have equitable access to healthcare
* 81 per cent of disabled people had a health appointment where their communication needs were unmet, while half of Deaf people (and others who need communication support) reported that their needs were rarely or never met.
* Training linked to the AIS has never been provided at over a third of health services, rising to 54 per cent in hospitals and health clinics surveyed.
The full report and a summary are available on their website as audio, British Sign Language, easy read, PDF or text-only versions.
